DJI Mavic pro drone review: the best drone for beginners

So you’ve never flown a drone before, or you’ve flown one before, but you feel there is more you could be doing with your camera. There is a new world of drones to explore, and it seems everybody has their favourite.

In the last year, it seems that the DJI Mavic pro drone has gone from being the beginner-friendly option, to the go-to option, to being the choice of the advanced beginner. The Mavic is incredibly easy to fly, great at taking aerial photos, and has a range of intelligent flight modes to help you get the best shot or video, such as Active Track, Follow me and Sports mode.

The Mavic is really versatile too, as its easy to fold up and fit in a car, or a backpack, and you can easily fly the Mavic with just one hand, it’s certainly a great all-rounder.

For this review I took the Mavic pro drone out and about, as well as taking it to events and festivals. I flew it in tricky light conditions at a music festival and with its clever LED lights to help me with night flying, and its easy to fly with just one hand, so it made flying a breeze.

The Mavic Pro’s great design gives you complete control with its smart remote, with a choice of three-axis flips and camera tilt, as well as a range of powerful features, including the Follow me GPS and intelligent Flight Mode Pro. This helps with advanced aerial shots, like those taken with the Mavic’s advanced Follow me mode.

The Mavic Pro is really stable, and its got great flight time too, with a range of clever features, including a built in LiPo battery that can be quickly charged by connecting to a standard phone charger. The Mavic pro drone also comes with an SD card slot so you can swap out your memory card, should you choose to take more photos and videos.

Other features include a built-in LED lighting system that gives you a powerful light beam with great illumination, and a range of intelligent flight modes, including a Follow me GPS and Intelligent Flight Mode Pro to make flying a breeze. The Mavic Pro also has a 4K camera, that offers you great video.

I like to carry the Mavic pro drone around in my backpack, so that when the Mavic is at home, I can quickly grab it and get out to the air. And, when I’m up at my air field at home, it’s easy to fly a few laps around.

I used the Mavic Pro for shooting this short movie:

For those of you looking for some great tips, here are some great tips to make sure you have the best Mavic experience.

The Mavic camera is great, but you need to use it with care to avoid crashing it. Learn how to use the Mavic with this fun Mavic crash course.

For me, the Mavic Pro is a must have when flying drones. I like to fly it around the town, and out in the air too, taking some great aerial shots with the Mavic Pro. It’s a great camera, that doesn’t disappoint at all.

I can fly longer than most with the Mavic pro drone, with a range of clever features, including a built in LiPo battery that can be quickly charged by connecting to a standard phone charger, so there’s no need to be tethered to a power source while out and about.

I like to take photos with the camera on my camera body too, and with some clever tricks, it’s easy to use the camera to take a quick shot. Check out my tips below.

My list of tips for Mavic pro drone:

TIP ONE: Use the Mavic’s camera to take photos from your camera body.

If you look at the top right of your camera, you’ll see a little camera icon. If you click this icon, the camera is switched on and ready to take photos. It’s a handy way to take quick photos without a battery, without switching the camera on (or forgetting to switch it on).

This is how I set up the camera. I’m standing on the ground, but the camera is already switched on. So, if I go flying, I won’t have to worry about my battery running out.

TIP TWO: Fly your drone as low as you can.

Fly the Mavic pro drone as low as possible to get as much air space between the drone and you. Even if you think you might hit your subject, you’ll be much more likely to hit a tree. The closer the drone, the less chance of hitting things in the air, and much more chance of hitting

If you’re new to aerial photography, you’re probably worried about flying too low. You don’t want to risk crashing the drone. With that in mind, your first few flights may be a little scary, but it’s important to push yourself. As you get more experienced, you’ll have less reason to be worried.

You can also practise flying with a camera mounted, which gives you the chance to try different camera angles. But, the thing is, the risk of crashing will always be there.

TIP THREE: Focus your camera first and then fly.

This isn’t the most obvious tip, but it’s important. It’s easy to make mistakes when flying. You won’t be able to see the ground, which is difficult to manoeuvre, and you’ll only be able to do one thing at a time. You can’t focus the camera and fly the drone at the same time. So, if you’re flying a low manoeuvre and focus your camera, you’ll need to wait for the camera to focus before you’re ready to fly.

TIP FOUR: Use your drone’s flight modes.

I know that drones have a variety of modes, but what you really want to look for are ways to control your drone. There are three different flight modes available, and they each have their own uses. The first is called sport mode. This is useful when you’re close to a physical obstruction and you want to avoid crashing. The second is called level mode. This is useful for flying in the air as you’re moving from one spot to another. The third is called obstacle avoidance mode. This is useful when you’re close to a surface, such as grass, that might affect your flight.

When you’re looking for modes, you need to check out how you’re holding the controls. You don’t want to have a drone that’s set to sports mode if you’re holding the controls too loose. Likewise, you don’t want to have one that’s set to level mode if you’re holding the controls too tight.

TIP FIVE: Fly at a safe distance.

Flying a drone is a thrilling experience, but it’s important that you take safety into account. When you’re flying a drone, make sure that you keep the drone no more than six feet away from yourself. If you try to get too close, then the drone could damage you.

TIP SIX: Take plenty of pictures.

This is the primary reason why drones are fun to use. You can use a drone to take pictures from all sorts of different angles, at different heights, and with different distances. There are, of course, cameras available that work with drones, so you can use them to snap photos, capture videos, and take more pictures.

If you want to take better pictures, then make sure to use a powerful camera. Your Mavic pro drone needs to be able to focus on the subject, but at the same time, you’ll also want to get in focus.

TIP SEVEN: Know where the closest helipads are.

When you’re trying to fly a Mavic pro drone, it’s important that you know where the closest helipads are. Helipads are areas that let you fly a drone with a pilot in a helicopter. When you’re flying your drone, you want to make sure that you’re close enough that you can get to the closest helipad.

TIP EIGHT: Know the wind direction.

Wind is one of the biggest challenges in flying a drone. If the wind is too strong, then the drone can’t work as well. So you want to make sure that the wind is blowing in a direction that’s not too strong. If you do a lot of flying, then you can set your drone to wind speed mode. Then, your drone will work better when the wind is blowing in the right direction.

TIP NINE: Make sure that your battery is fully charged.

One of the biggest risks when you’re flying your drone is that you can drain your battery. So you need to make sure that you’re taking care of your battery and making sure that you’re keeping it charged.

Mavic mini Gimbal

TIP TEN: Don’t forget to practice your drone flying.

Of course, you can learn how to use a drone when you get it, but you can also practice. There are some really cool software programs that let you fly your drone. And you can also find challenges on your own to try and complete. These challenges will make sure that you’re not only practicing, but that you’re also getting a little bit better each time that you’re flying your drone.
